We are fortunate to have a good number of new servers after a recent recruitment drive and so it was time to have a training session for the new recruits. 16 young servers gathered in the church hall for a fun day organised by Fr Darren and supported by James Judge, Jonathan Day, Janet Metcalf and Jean Hampson.
After some icebreakers, it was time for the young people to get to know the Liturgy a little better as well as becoming more familiar with some of the sacred vessels and other items used during the Liturgy. Four teams were established for a quiz that Fr Darren had devised to test their knowledge.
Due to a sudden downpour which postponed the outdoor games, an animated film was shown next depicting the Easter Story followed by the first practice of the day in church. With Easter services taking place soon, this was a chance for all to become familiar with some important duties so that they could become confident and serve with dignity and grace.
After lunch it was time to learn a little bit about St Stephen and the Guild of St Stephen, the society or "Archconfraternity" that servers join after 6 months of service. We were told a little about the life and sacrifice of St Stephen and the standards that are expected while serving on the altar.
The afternoon included a fun cooperative game called "team building eggs" where each team had to work together to construct a device made from a newspaper, string, bag and tape that would prevent an egg smashing when dropped from a height.
The day concluded with another practice and outside games for what was a fun, yet informative day.
