The title of this short article refers to the photographs that, accompany it. For over the past couple of weeks we have been transforming the church from a rather dark building into one that reflects the light.
The bricks have been covered with plaster and the plaster covered with paint and the overall effect is a bright and airy building. The building it typical for its age and design. It was quite 'trendy' in the 1970s to have exposed brick work on the inside of buildings. But brick only seems to get darker and darker and drink in the light. And when the windows are relatively small and and coloured with dark shades of glass, the general effect is to have an interior devoid of natural light. Hopefully, the new look will enhance the ambience of the church and make it more prayerful and a more pleasant space for worshipping God.
Great thanks must go to those who turned up to do the extra cleaning that was necessary before the weekend Masses; thanks too, to the men of the parish who came to strip the church of benches and statues and stations of the cross to enable the work and who turned up to put everything back again. Hours of work and a real community effort.
