And indeed it was 'fair enough' - the Parish / School Christmas Fair held immediatelay after the 9.30am Mass in the Parish Hall and the School Hall. There were lots of people working togther on a joint venture to raise funds for the school and parish.
One of the problems with 'Christmas Fairs' is that they fall in Advent. In most Catholic churches the priests will be encouraging the congregations not to get sucked into the secularisation of Christmas. For in our society there is very much a 'commercial Christmas' which begins in mid-October and ends with the closing of the last cash register on Christmas Eve. To a great extent Christ is being elbowed out of Christmas. And that is why this, and most other parishes, are overtly encouraging parishioners to use this time well to prepare in spirit for the great celebration of the Incarnation. So whilst Christmas Fairs may be a necessity, they shoul;d always play second fiddle to Advent and that nuamnces time of preparation. O Come. O Come Emmanuel!
