Candlemas

The Monday morning Mass was turned into a more solemn celebration than usual to honour the feast of the Presentation of the Lord.

In the Gospel for the day we hear the old man Simeon proclaim the Christ Child to be the, ‘Light to enlighten the Gentiles.’ Thus we are assured that Jesus came for everyone and not simply for the Jewish people. But it is that reference to light that gives special significance to the day. Over the ages the ‘lights’ (candles) to be used in church in the following 12 months are blest on this day – hence Candlemas.
