On Fridays during Lent we have a 'hunger lunch' after the midday Mass.
Each week a class comes over from our primary school to join us for Mass, after which they and parishioners come into the hall for a bowl of soup and a roll. Those attending are asked to make a donation to Aid to the Church in Need, a charity supporting those persecuted for their faith. Just having a soup and roll, rather than a full meal, reminds us of our Lenten duty to fast - we go without something in order to help us make space for God; in donating money, we also remember the need to give alms. All this after we celebrate Mass. So prayer, fasting and almsgiving - all the Lenten observances together!
